iPhone Duo Supply Chain Ramps Up to Meet Demand

Apple has significantly increased production targets for its new folding device following a surge in pre-orders.

Apple has directed its manufacturing partners to increase production of the new iPhone Duo by more than 40%, a move driven by a wave of consumer interest that caught attention shortly after pre-ordering began. This decision comes as the company attempts to fulfill shipping commitments for its latest folding device.

The surge in activity began the moment pre-orders opened on Friday. Within minutes, customers reported that estimated delivery dates had been pushed back, with some slots not appearing until late January. Apple attributed the delays to what it termed “extraordinary” demand for the device, while also placing a limit of two units per customer to discourage scalping.

Reports from supply chain sources indicate that the company has adjusted its shipment targets from 9.7 million to 14 million units for the device's first 12 months of availability. This expansion suggests that Apple anticipates sustained interest in the product line rather than a temporary spike in sales.

Following the initial rush, some customers who had been assigned later delivery dates have reported receiving earlier shipping estimates. This shift aligns with the reported increase in production capacity, as the company works to address the backlog created during the opening moments of the pre-order window.

Early adopters are encountering some friction regarding software compatibility. Third-party applications have not yet been fully optimized for the new form factor, though Apple has stated that developers are working quickly to update their apps. Reviews based on the first week of usage have consistently identified app support as a primary concern.

Beyond software, hardware specifications have also drawn scrutiny. Some users have noted the downgrade to Touch ID as a notable feature of the device, a point raised in initial reviews of the hardware.

Looking ahead, the company appears to be preparing for future iterations of the hardware. Reports indicate that prototypes for an iPhone Duo 2 are currently in testing and are equipped with Face ID technology.
